Obituary for Karen Marcum

Karen Faye Marcum, age 66, of Beauty, Ky, entered eternal rest on Monday, January 17, 2022 after a short but fierce battle with glioblastoma.

She was born August 29, 1955 in Paintsville, Ky. to Etta Mae Cassady Marcum and the late Tom Marcum.

Karen was a graduate of Sheldon Clark High School and Marshall University. As a media specialist, she was a dedicated educator serving several school districts across eastern Kentucky in Morgan, Greenup and Carter counties. The majority of her career was spent at East Carter County High School where she loved and cherished her students. After retirement, she loved to travel and work outside on her properties in Carter and Martin counties.

Karen lived for her family and her life revolved around them. Her daughter, Karie Gauze and son-in-law, Travis Olesen and granddaughter, Zoe Hettinger, of Des Moines, Iowa will greatly miss their loving “Nana.”

In addition, she leaves behind her mother, Etta Mae Marcum of Beauty, KY. and two brothers, Tommy Darrell (Linda) Marcum of Grayson, KY David (Alecia) Marcum of Vacaville, CA.
She was a beloved aunt to Marsha (Bobby) Hall of Olive Hill, KY, Beth (Mark) Morrison of Cincinnati, OH and Paul Marcum of Grayson, Ky, and a great-aunt to Stacy Marcum of Huntington, WV, Sarah Hall of Louisville, KY, Jonah Morrison, Cassady Morrison and Riley Morrison of Cincinnati, OH and Hudson Salyers, Olive Hill, KY. In addition to her family, Karen was blessed with many friendships leaving memories to be cherished for years to come.

Although our hearts are broken of the natural loss, we are reminded of the scripture in II Timothy Ch 4, Verse 7-8: “I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

Honoring Karen’s wishes, a private service was held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at her residence in Beauty, KY prior to interment at the nearby Marcum Cemetery.

In her final days, Karen was lovingly cared for at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, KY and wishes condolences to be directed as donations in her memory.
