Obituary for James William "Jim" Thornton

James "Jim" William Thornton, 77, of Columbus, Ohio was called home on Friday, February 4, 2022, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Jim was born January 22, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio, the seventh of eight children, to the late Robert J. And Loretta C. (Maurer) Thornton.

Jim was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving from July 1965 to July 1968 and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and Expert Rifle Medal.

He married his wife, Mary, on June 27, 1970, referring to that as "The best decision I ever made."

An electrician by trade, Jim ran his own business from April 1975 to January 1982 in Johnstown, Ohio. Ever the problem solver, he enjoyed employment as a maintenance supervisor in the years following. He was a unique, mechanically gifted man.

Jim loved God and his family. He loved kissing and cuddling his wife. He got a kick out of antagonizing his children. A kid at heart, he enjoyed telling jokes and making people laugh. He wrote short stories which he told to his children and grandchildren. He dreamed of moving to the country and becoming self-sufficient. He loved an adventure.

Jim's hobbies included writing, drawing and sketching, playing computer games, chess and checkers, gardening and preserving, camping, "plinking", and being outdoors.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Loretta (Don) Risher, Lois (Frank) Scandinaro, Betty (Bob) Rall, Mary Ann (Doug) Wise; brothers, Robert and Joseph; mother-in-law, Georgia (Meade) Hannah; brother-in-law, Larry Mills; and son-in-law, Christopher Harper.

Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Hannah); children, Deana Harper of Maryland, Daniel (Amber) of New Jersey, and James II (Meghan) of Virginia; grandchildren, Amie, Ariana, Casey America (Conor), Madison, and Tyler; sister, Patty (Bob) Quesenberry; father-in-law, Clifford Hannah; sisters-in-law, Nina Mills and Bea Thornton; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be from 10am-1pm on Friday, February 11, 2022 at the Mullins Family Funeral Home with funeral services being conducted at 1pm with Joe Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in the Hannah Cemetery of Marrowbone, WV. In response to COVID-19, we ask that all attendees wear a face covering and practice social distancing guidelines.
